The South Indian filter coffee is not just any regular coffee filter in India, it is an emotion !

An aroma every Indian longs for may it be early in the morning or late chill evenings.

This widely celebrated way of coffee brewing is very rewarding with a perfect decoction that is just the perfect amount of bittersweet and strong.

Through research and consumer studies, we realized that traditional coffee brewing methods are either cumbersome and space-consuming or lack the sensory richness and ritual of the process. The goal was to create a compact, intuitive brewing system that preserves the essence of slow coffee rituals while fitting seamlessly into modern lifestyles.

Concept 01 - Inspired by the beauty of the filter paper
The natural wave formed at the edge of the filter paper gives it a very elegant appearance.

Concept 02- Inspired by the great wave of Kanagawa
The iconic Japanese wave serves as an inspiration point for this concept.

Concept 03 - Inspired by Japanese pottery
The harmonious blend of traditional techniques and natural aesthetics, reflecting the beauty of nature and simplicity.

The outcome is a modern reinterpretation of the traditional Indian coffee brewing ritual, designed to bring intentionality, warmth, and simplicity into everyday moments. The product celebrates the quiet process of extraction - where time, gravity, and material come together to create a mindful experience.

The design merges traditional metal brass combined with the modern and practical silicone puck and cap to evoke familiarity while elevating it through a refined, contemporary lens. The transparent double-walled vessel reveals the brewing process, turning it into a visual treat, while the warm material palette reflects the sensory richness of coffee itself.

The container and damper collapse inside the glass, creating a compact and travel-friendly design.

Assembly is very easy: simply remove the puck from the glass, insert the container, reattach the puck, and close with the cap.

Iterating brew mechanics through brass hand molded and 3D printed prototypes

Quantifying extraction to refine consistency and taste by measuring the TDS

Validating the experience through real-world sensory feedback.

"The Ritual" is designed not just as a tool, but as an object of pause, encouraging users to slow down, engage with the process, and reconnect with the act of making coffee. The compact form further adapts this ritual for modern living, balancing tradition with convenience.

By reimagining a culturally rooted practice through a minimal, design-forward approach, the product bridges the gap between heritage and modern lifestyle, transforming an everyday routine into a meaningful experience.
